Last.fm Normalizer – Charts by Listening Time Instead of Play Count

Last.fm

A little extension to Last.fm generates Charts of your personal listening habits. In contrast to the official Last.fm-Profile-Charts, it doesn’t rank artists by the number of times that you listened to their songs, but by the time you spent listening.

» Last.fm Normaliser

These charts can differ quite much from the official charts. In my charts, for example, Opeth jumped from place 8 to the top. Last.fm Normalizer estimates that I spent one and a half day listening to Opeth. 🙂 29 hours of Subway to Sally (#2), 28 hours of Oomph! (#3) and 20 hours of Deine Lakaien (#4)…

To estimate these values, Last.fm Normaliser first gets the top50 artists from your Last.fm profile. Then it queries information about records and tracks of these bands from MusicBrainz. From all track lengths, it then uses the median value and multiplies it with the listening count.

So, who can boast with the most extreme listening time? 🙂

4,302 mins jumps DragonForce from 4th to the top of my chart, as I’d expected. However, top artist Our Lady Peace only fell to second, with 3,872 mins in total. Also of note was Sigur Rós going from 14 up to 7.

Big risers further down were Daft Punk (up 7), Led Zep (up 8), Avenged Sevenfold (up 7) and Jeff Buckley (up 10). Those that went down most were Dead Kennedys (down 9), Secret Dakota Ring (down 9) and Bill Bailey (down 7).
